People in Japan

行こう! (Let’s go!)

What are Japanese people listening to? (Japanese Billboard, from the 29th June)

To be honest, I’m sick of the song on the no. 1 one spot 🤣 (Bling-Bang-Bang Born by Creepy Nuts).

It was fun at first, but then I started hearing it every time I opened Instagram. No thanks.

But CONNECT by IS:SUE is pretty good, and Mrs. GREEN APPLE takes up two spots which is impressive.

Anyway, here are the top 10 songs on the Japanese Billboard AND my personal ratings for the songs (accessed on the 29th of June):

Creepy Nuts

  1. Bling-Bang-Bang Born by Creepy Nuts (2/10)

  2. CONNECT by IS:SUE (7/10)

  3. Last Night (Guitar by Park Juwan) by JEONGHAN X WONWOO (4/10)

  4. Lilac by Mrs. GREEN APPLE (6/10)

  5. Columbus by Mrs. GREEN APPLE (8/10)

  6. Billions Of Light Years by Omoinotake (8/10)

  7. Bansanka by tuki. (7/10)

  8. Supernatural by NewJeans (5/10)

  9. Magnetic by ILLIT (9/10)

  10. Marugoto Jelly Beans by Colorful Diamond (7/10)

“Magnetic” is definitely my favorite song from this list just because it’s so catchy!!! 😆.

I’m not a K-pop fan but I know good music when I hear it :)

What’s your favorite song right now???

Japan’s gender equality has increased, but it’s still not great.

Japanese Women

Out of 146 countries, Japan ranks 118th in gender equality. Last year it was 125th but even now, it’s still one of the lowest among the G-7 nations.

The political sector in particular takes a hit because of few women being in high positions as well as economically, where there are not enough women in managerial and executive roles.

For a regional comparison, South Korea is ranked 94th while China is ranked 106th.

Iceland remains the top country for gender equality.

Why are People Heading to Japan?

It’s no surprise that Japan is a popular tourist destination. In the first 5 months of 2024, the land of the rising sun received 14.5 million tourists — a 70% increase from last year. That’s already on track to surpass the 2019 record of 31 million visitors!

Selfieeeeeeeeeeee

You see, the yen’s significant depreciation has made Japan an affordable destination for international tourists.

The top visitors include:

  • The Chinese

  • The Taiwanese

  • The South Koreans

  • and over 1 million Americans

And here’s a fun fact — Chinese tourists tend to spend twice as much as the average tourist.

Hotel prices in Japan are rising. But they’re still pretty low to their international counterparts. An average hotel room rate is $177 in Tokyo compared to $300 in New York and $250 in Singapore.

Sounds like a good deal to me.

Thank you for reading this far.

This was a little different from usual, but we’ll go back to Japanese lessons next week 🙂.

But let me know if you enjoyed this issue. I’m open to these types of issues once in a while — but not every week because there’s only so much to talk about 😆. Well, unless you guys want to know about politics, economics and old men in suits which I highly doubt.

Anyway, enjoy your day!
