Anime of the day: To Be Hero X

I love this anime. It’s an anime about being a hero. I’m only on episode 5, so I can’t say much yet, but it’s such a fun watch. Intense fight scenes. Great writing. 2D animation. 3D animation. It has it all.

The Lazy Samurai and the Town’s Rules

Story

むかしむかし、小さな町に、のんびりな侍が住んでいました。
Mukashi mukashi, chiisana machi ni, nonbiri na samurai ga sunde imashita.
Long ago, in a small town, there lived a lazy samurai.

この町は静かで、きれいな町でした。
Kono machi wa shizuka de, kirei na machi deshita.
This town was quiet and beautiful.

でも、町の人たちは少し困っていました。
Demo, machi no hitotachi wa sukoshi komatte imashita.
But the townspeople were a little troubled.

なぜなら、侍は毎日昼までねて、仕事をしなかったからです。
Nazenara, samurai wa mainichi hiru made nete, shigoto o shinakatta kara desu.
Because the samurai slept until noon every day and didn’t work.

Grammar note:
“〜から” means “because”.
Example: 雨だから行きません (Ame dakara ikimasen) – Because it’s raining, I won’t go.

町長（ちょうちょう）はまじめな人でした。
Chōchō wa majime na hito deshita.
The mayor was a serious person.

ある日、町長は新しいルールを作りました。
Aru hi, chōchō wa atarashii ruuru o tsukurimashita.
One day, the mayor made a new rule.

「侍は朝６時におきて、掃除（そうじ）をすること！」
"Samurai wa asa roku-ji ni okite, sōji o suru koto!"
"The samurai must wake up at 6 AM and clean!"

でも、侍は言いました。
Demo, samurai wa iimashita.
But the samurai said:

「私は戦（いくさ）はできるが、ほうきは使えぬ！」
"Watashi wa ikusa wa dekiru ga, hōki wa tsukaenu!"
"I can fight in wars, but I cannot use a broom!"

町の人たちは笑いました。
Machi no hitotachi wa warai mashita.
The townspeople laughed.

そこで、子どもたちは侍に掃除のしかたを教えました。
Soko de, kodomotachi wa samurai ni sōji no shikata o oshiemashita.
So, the children taught the samurai how to clean.

そして、町はもっときれいになりました。
Soshite, machi wa motto kirei ni narimashita.
And the town became even cleaner.

侍も少しだけ、早く起きるようになりました。
Samurai mo sukoshi dake, hayaku okiru yō ni narimashita.
Even the samurai started waking up a little earlier.

Mini Grammar Notes

• のんびりな (nonbiri na) = "laid-back" or "lazy" (used with な because it's a na-adjective)

• 静かな町 (shizuka na machi) = “quiet town”

• きれいな町 (kirei na machi) = “beautiful town”

• まじめな人 (majime na hito) = “serious person”

• 〜こと at the end of a rule = used to make a verb into a noun-like command

  • e.g., 掃除をすること = “cleaning (must be done)”

• 〜ぬ = old-fashioned version of “ない” (not)

  • 使えぬ = 使えない = cannot use
